How to Open AVIF Files
AVIF uses AV1 stills for excellent photo compression. Chrome, Firefox, and Safari (recent) can display it; many desktop editors and Windows Photos builds still struggle. Conversion is the reliable path for sharing.
Why it won't open
The viewer lacks an AV1/AVIF decoder. Encode support also lags — some apps can view but not edit.

Open the .avif in an up-to-date Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari window.
Editors
Recent Photoshop and web tooling may import AVIF. Older suites need a JPG/PNG intermediate.
Steps
- Try a current browser first.
- If the app still fails, convert AVIF → JPG (photos) or PNG (when you need lossless/alpha).
