AVIF can store transparent pixels — AVIF supports transparency (including alpha where the codec/container allows). Keep a format with alpha when you need soft edges or overlays.

Does PNG to AVIF lose quality?
It can. AVIF is typically lossy, so encoding may discard detail for smaller files. Use higher quality/bitrate settings when fidelity matters, and keep the PNG master.
Does converting PNG to AVIF reduce quality?
Often yes at default lossy settings. Raise quality/bitrate for delivery, or stay on a lossless format when you still need a master.
Can you recover quality after converting?
Not from a lossy output alone. Return to the original master (or a better source). Converting to a lossless format does not resurrect discarded detail.
What is generational loss?
Damage that stacks when you decode and lossy-encode the same file over and over (for example JPG→edit→JPG). Edit from masters and export delivery formats once.

Can every browser create AVIF?
