What happens during document conversion?
PDF can include transparent pixels; DOCX cannot. Transparent regions are flattened onto a solid background. PDF: PDF can embed compressed images, fonts, and streams. Scanned PDFs are only as light as their page images; text-based PDFs stay compact. “Quality” is about embedded assets and whether text is real or rasterized. Word: DOCX is a ZIP package of XML parts. “Compression” is package-level; images inside dominate size. It is not a visual quality codec like JPEG. An editable Word document; headings are detected and preserved where possible.
