JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a lossy raster image format optimized for photographs and complex color gradients, introduced by Joint Photographic Experts Group (1992). JPG/JPEG is still the default camera-share format: small files, universal decoding, and good enough quality for social and email. Avoid it for logos and screenshots with sharp text — use PNG or WebP instead.

JPEG splits images into blocks and discards high-frequency detail people notice less. Quality settings trade size for sharpness. Each re-encode can add generation loss — keep a master when you expect more edits. JPG is excellent for photos and weak for flat UI text.

JPEG has no alpha channel. Transparent designs must be flattened onto a background color or converted to PNG/WebP/AVIF that support transparency.

Standard JPEG is a still image. Motion requires another format (GIF, animated WebP, or video such as MP4).

EXIF (camera, lens, exposure, orientation), IPTC/XMP captions, and sometimes GPS. Browsers may auto-rotate using orientation tags. Strip metadata before publishing if location or device details should stay private.
