Can You Recover Quality After Converting?
“Upscaling” and “AI enhance” can make files look sharper or cleaner, but they hallucinate plausible detail — they do not retrieve the original samples. True recovery requires the pre-lossy original.
Verdict: You cannot mathematically recover lost quality from a lossy convert. Keep masters; convert copies for delivery.
What is gone
Coefficients and samples discarded by JPG/MP3/H.264 encodes are not hiding in the file. Lossless wrappers do not resurrect them.
What you can do
Find the HEIC/RAW/WAV/PNG master, a higher-bitrate mezzanine, or re-export from the editor project.
Enhancement vs recovery
Sharpening, denoise, and AI upscalers change appearance. Treat them as new creative steps, not undelete.
