Lossy vs Lossless When Converting Files
Whether conversion hurts quality depends on the encode — not the word “convert.” Here’s how lossy and lossless targets behave for images, audio, and video.
Lossless targets protect current data
PNG, lossless WebP, FLAC, and many remuxes keep the information you feed them. They do not restore detail an earlier JPG or MP3 step already discarded.
Lossy targets trade detail for size
JPG, MP3, AAC, and typical H.264 exports discard data on purpose. That is normal for delivery — raise quality/bitrate when fidelity matters, and don’t loop lossy saves.
Practical rule
Archive in the best master you have. Convert lossy only for the share copy. Read the quality guide for your pair (PNG→JPG, WAV→MP3, video→MP4) before you click convert.
