How to Open EPUB Files
EPUB is the open ebook standard: reflowable text, chapters, and metadata. It is not a Word document and not a Kindle AZW file. “Won’t open” usually means you double-clicked it in a browser or Word instead of an ebook app.
Why it won't open
Windows Explorer and many office apps do not treat EPUB as a native document. You need an ebook reader or a conversion.
Native ways to open
iPhone / Mac
Open in Apple Books — AirDrop or Files → Share → Books.
Windows
Use Calibre, Microsoft Edge’s EPUB support where available, or another reader — or convert to PDF.
Android
Google Play Books, Lithium, or similar EPUB readers.
Steps
- Open the .epub in an ebook app (Books, Calibre, Play Books).
- If you need print-style pages or a locked layout, convert EPUB → PDF.
- For notes/search in plain text, try EPUB → TXT or Markdown.
